Be in the moment, even in Anger
Floating down the River of Life isn’t always about being peaceful and “Zen” all day long. It’s about being present in whatever emotion you happen to be in. There are constant changes in the River of Your Life including different sized rapids and obstacles for you to navigate. Your fight or flight mechanism is triggered every day in navigating these.
What we want to do is help you Float Sideways even when you’re really pissed about something too!
The key is to take just a moment and ask yourself what outcome you are attached to that is making you upset.
What’s the obstacle slowing your path or occluding your view of the River? A person? A thing? Is it imaginary or real? Then ask yourself “Why that?” Be honest with your answer. Observe what your immediate emotional responses are , or depending on the obstacle, just let the feeling occupy the space and let it move away on down the River. Some obstacles are easier to get by than others, and not everything needs to be explored in depth. When navigating around the bigger obstacles, however, if you need to, take a break, (pull an Eddy), catch your breathe and then paddle back out on the River with regained calm and focus. It’s actually possible to be angry and calm at the same time!
If the same obstacle keeps showing up, try paddling a different way.
If the obstacle keeps showing up in front of your inner tube you may as well open yourself up to exploring a different way around it or it will eventually become detrimental; causing a hole in your raft, or others’ currently on the trip with you. Then you may feel even worse!
Even if the ultimate outcome of your journey isn’t what you think you wanted when you started, it may be the current you were meant to take.
Either way, you just found your way to get moving again after the log jam that anger can cause.
